Volunteering at Bandelier

Last February, after the annual meeting of the Friends’ Board of Trustees with Bandelier staff, I left feeling disheartened by the challenges facing Bandelier—and the entire National Park Service—in light of the new federal policies put in place by the current administration in Washington D. C. It was unclear how the Friends could directly help support the park’s initiative and programs. But there was one clear message about what I could do to help: volunteer.

Over the past year, I have volunteered with invasive species removal, trail work, leading interpretive walks, monitoring visitors at Tsankawi, and—most of all—helping behind the desk at the Visitor Center. By working side by side with staff, I gained a deeper appreciation for their dedication to the protection of park resources. Each of them faces personal challenges in navigating through today’s changing political landscape, yet they carry on with pride in their service. Each remains committed to enriching visitors’ experiences and helping visitors appreciate and understand the cultural and natural richness of Bandelier.

If you live in northern New Mexico, please consider volunteering at the park. No matter what your skill set, there is a place and need for you at Bandelier. If you are interested in volunteering in any capacity, please contact Bianca Mancilla, the park’s Community Volunteer Ambassador at bianca_mancilla@partner.nps.gov, or Cecilia Shields, Chief of Interpretation and Visitor Services, at cecilia_shields@nps.gov.
